The new standards establishing requirements for the design, production and quality control of asphalt concrete mixtures were discussed at the final webinar of the FAA "ROSDORNIA"
The features of modern standards for asphalt concrete, as well as the issues of their implementation in construction practice, were discussed during the final online conference of a series of webinars organized by the FAA "ROSDORNII". The last webinar was one of the largest, in two days it gathered almost 330 listeners – regional performers of the national project "Safe and high-quality highways".
The moderators were Andrey Chvanov, Director of Science of the FAU "ROSDORNII", President of the ROSASFALT Association, Chairman of TC-418 "Road Economy" and member of the Supervisory Board of the FAU "ROSDORNII" Nikolay Bystrov and Director of Organizational Activities of the CC FAU "ROSDORNII" Alexey Kovrov.
Until recently, in the Russian Federation, the selection of the composition, production and quality control of asphalt concrete was carried out in accordance with the requirements of GOST 9128, and crushed-mastic asphalt concrete – in accordance with GOST 31015. Despite the fact that GOST 9128 and GOST 31015 in the current editions were put into effect already in this century, they retained the approaches of the middle of the last century. Asphalt concrete produced according to these standards does not meet the modern operating conditions of road surfaces. In addition, in terms of requirements for raw materials, these standards do not comply with the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union "Road Safety".
New standards have already been developed and are being implemented for asphalt concrete and cement, devoid of such shortcomings. These are GOST R 58401.1 and GOST R 58401.2 – standards of the system of volumetric and functional design in force since 2019 and GOST R 58406.1 and GOST R 58406.2, which come into effect from June 1, 2020, developed on the basis of European experience. These two systems are equivalent, which gives Customers the opportunity to choose an approach taking into account specific conditions.
The first report was made by Elena Kashevskaya, Head of the R&D Innovation Department of the CC FAU "ROSDORNII". In her report, the speaker highlighted the features of the Register of New and best technologies, materials and technological solutions for reuse. Elena Kashevskaya also voiced the prospects for the development of the Registry. For wide access resource, created by the FAA "ROSDORNII" within the framework of the National Project "Safe and high-quality Highways", it was opened less than a year ago, but the platform has already proven its effectiveness. It is worth noting that asphalt concrete mixtures that meet modern standards are included in the Register and their use in the subjects of the Russian Federation within the framework of the national project is taken into account when achieving the established target indicator "The share of contracts for road activities involving the use of new technologies and materials included in the Register of new and best technologies, materials and technological solutions re-appliediya".
The following report was made by the head of the Department of Laboratory Support of the BCC Sergey Stuk. The speaker spoke about the distinctive features of the new standards. The fundamental differences between the new design systems and the old ones were considered in terms of approaches to assessing the compliance of the grain composition of the produced mixture, to the appointment of mixing and compaction temperatures, to the acceptance of the produced mixture and compacted asphalt concrete. The issues of modern classification of bitumen binders depending on the temperature ranges of operation and transport loads. In addition, the subjects were offered practical assistance in analyzing the selection of asphalt concrete mixtures and testing bitumen binders at the facilities of the laboratory of the FAA "ROSDORNIA".
The event was attended by representatives of the ANO "Research Institute of TSK", which is the developer of the set of standards under consideration – Kirill Zhdanov and Georgy Kadyrov. The speakers spoke in detail about the technical requirements, the principles of designing mixtures, the necessary tests.
The differences between the national standards and the PNST, instead of which they were developed, were considered. The effectiveness of approaches to quality assurance laid down in modern standards was noted.
The presentation was completed by representatives of the Industry-wide Competence Center - Olga Vorobyeva, Deputy Director for Organizational Activities of the BCC, and Alexander Tikhonov, Deputy Head of the Department for the Development of Scientific and Technical Potential of the Road Industry. The speakers told about the features of the practical application of the volumetric-functional method of designing asphalt concrete mixtures. All technological stages were considered: from the design of compositions in laboratories, and the release of these mixtures at asphalt concrete plants, to their laying.
Of course, the modern system requires a higher culture of work during the production and laying of asphalt concrete mix, imposes additional requirements on the raw materials, and requires strict control at all stages of production. However, it is difficult to overestimate the result that can be achieved with the introduction of these technologies, and this is the high quality of our highways and a significant increase in the inter-repair service life!
