"Smart" traffic lights equipped with motion sensors may appear in Russia as early as next year. Changes to the relevant GOST standards will be prepared by the Russian Road Research Institute (RosdorNII) by the end of 2020, the Izvestia newspaper reports.
RosdorNII, commissioned by the Ministry of Transport, has identified the most effective measures to reduce road deaths, RosdorNII told Izvestia. In particular, the institute's specialists pay attention to the British Puffin Crossing system ("friendly crossing"). It is a "smart" traffic light with sensors that react to pedestrians. At the traffic light for pedestrians, the red light will not turn on while a person is walking along the zebra, and the green light will turn off if
there is no one at the crossing anymore.
As noted in RosdorNIA, such "smart" traffic lights can reduce the waiting time for both motorists and pedestrians. Efficiency analysis
The analysis, which was conducted in the United States for three years, showed a decrease in the number of accidents with pedestrians by almost a quarter.
In addition, to reduce the speed of traffic flow, it is proposed to use noise strips and artificial bumps in front of transitions. How
RosdorNIA noted that indirect means of influence work effectively to reduce speed: zigzag movement of cars, narrowing of lanes
or a reduction in their number.
It is also proposed to test the combination of a pedestrian crossing with a "speed bump" on the streets of Russian cities. Their use reduces the speed
