Scientists from Perm National Research Polytechnic University have proposed using polyurethane-based road surfaces and crushed stone composites to reduce the slipperiness of roads and the level of car accidents, the popular scientific portal Naked Science reports on March 14.

The innovative coating is proposed to be used for slopes of highways and cones of bridges in places known as the most dangerous due to the large number of accidents. The developers have already received eight patents for an accelerated method of manufacturing macro-rough road surfaces.

The results of the development and research of the properties of the new material, carried out jointly with specialists of JSC OrgSintezResurs (Moscow), Moscow Automobile and Road State Technical University and FAU ROSDORNII, were published in the journal AIP Conference Proceedings.

Professor of the Department of Automobiles and Technological Machines of Perm Polytechnic University, Doctor of Technical Sciences Andrey Kochetkov said: "In order to reduce the slipperiness of roads, they are now creating coatings based on epoxy resins or volumetric polyurethanes curing. For the first time, we proposed using film-cured polyurethanes. In addition, they can be used as friction materials to ensure the safety of the movement of trucks and special vehicles."

The developers checked the technology of manufacturing the new coating for compliance with the requirements of modern technical regulations and other regulatory documents. Safety requirements in accordance with the Federal Law "On State Control (Supervision) and Municipal Control" are assessed in the form of an acceptable risk of harm.

To assess the risk of critical values of the coefficient of friction of the developed coating, scientists have modeled various macro-rough textures, which are obtained by distributing grain stone material on fast-hardening layers of polyurethane mixtures.

Experimental studies of the developed road surfaces in real conditions were carried out at experimental sites in the Saratov region in cooperation with the FAA "ROSDORNII". Studies have shown a high coefficient of adhesion of the new material on all road sections and at using all fractions.

The project of researchers from Perm Polytechnic University and OrgSintezResurs JSC was recognized as the best development of the road economy of the Russian Federation at the ASPOR Employers' Union competition
