The issues of the use of bitumen binders were discussed at a conference with the participation of the FAA "ROSDORNIA"

A two-day online meeting was held on the basis of "MAXConference". The speakers were united by the theme "Organic binders and asphalt concrete mixtures in road construction".

The event takes place every year and brings together hundreds of participants represented by representatives of federal authorities, road construction organizations, manufacturers of organic binders, design institutes, the scientific community, regional road administrations, companies producing additives and equipment for the production of asphalt concrete. Foreign experts from all over the world also join the webinar. The conference is held in a live format of public discussion. Experts of ROSDORNIA have traditionally been among the participants of the discussions and moderators.

This year, the conference was held online for the first time, while the format of the event did not affect the involvement of participants in the discussion. This is due to the fact that the demand for innovations in the road industry in 2020 has grown significantly due to the implementation of the national project "Safe and High-quality Highways". The discussions were based on the most pressing issues: a variety of regulatory and technical issues documents establishing technical requirements and testing methods for organic binders and asphalt concrete, the development of the materials market, new methods and technologies to extend the service life of highways and improve the reliability and durability of road structures.

On the importance of taking into account the climatic features of different regions of Russia when choosing bitumen binders on the first day of discussions, he toldMikhail Slavutsky, head of the laboratory of the CC FAU "ROSDORNII". He reviewed the methodology for determining the indicators of bitumen binders required from the operating conditions of the highway, established in PNST 397-2020, and also proposed an alternative – based on the data of the SNIP "Construction Climatology" and the regulations of the American standard AASHTO R29. The studies conducted in the BCC laboratory showed the presence of the following problem in the Russian Federation: in fact, bitumen binders with a lower PG characteristic are used in the road industry, as a rule, which does not meet climatic requirements. The solution of this issue will significantly increase the time before the need for repairs.

The session "Prospects for the design and application of asphalt concrete mixtures in layers of road structures", which began the second day of discussions, was attended byNikolay Belyaev, Chief specialist of the construction department of the roadbed of the FAA "ROSDORNII". His speech was devoted to technologies for strengthening road clothes. The need for this and other effective technologies is due to the fact that several hundred new automatic weight and size control posts will soon appear on the roads of Russia. Recall that in order to provide regulatory support for their construction, on the instructions of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, the FAA "ROSDORNIA" is developing a draft preliminary national standard. In the process of its creation, it was determined that in order to ensure high-quality operation and durability of sensors, non-rigid road clothing with asphalt concrete coating in the APVGC zone should have at least a third more load-bearing capacity than the main structure. Among the proposed design solutions, the laying of reinforcing grids between layers of asphalt concrete with their homologation can also be considered cast emulsion-mineral mixture.

"Such meetings are very important, I participate in them every year. This is a live communication, an opportunity for everyone to speak out, voice suggestions and comments. This is an open dialogue between industry representatives. The uniqueness lies in the fact that the discussions of customers, contractors and manufacturers reveal the need to adjust the regulatory framework. In recent years, at MAXConference, we have been forming a resolution at the end of the sessions with proposals from the participants," Evgeny Damier shared.
