One of the largest educational webinars of the Scientific Institute was held with the participation of experts, manufacturers of machinery, equipment and materials.

The online seminar "Rules for working with regeneration and stabilization technologies: machines, mechanisms, materials" was held on the platform of the educational portal. Hundreds of representatives of the road industry from all over Russia joined the event. The Scientific Institute has been preparing for the webinar for more than one month in order to collect the most up-to-date and complete information on the use of two innovative technologies: cold regeneration of layers of road clothes and soil stabilization of the foundation of the roadbed.

Due to the scale of the event, the General Director of the FAA "ROSDORNIA" made a welcoming speech at the webinar for the first timeAlexey Varyatchenko. Greeting the audience, he outlined the importance and relevance of the seminar topics.

"Today, the road industry of the Russian Federation is at the stage of global restructuring to a new technological level. It is important to understand what exactly regeneration technologies are and stabilization, coupled with advanced technology of volumetric and functional design, will allow the regions to get out of the endless series of repairs of the same sections of highways and redirect the released funds for the reconstruction and construction of new sections. Therefore, the FAA "ROSDORNII" conducts such events so that truly safe and high-quality highways are built in our country," Alexey Varyatchenko said.

The task of such events, according to Alexey Varyatchenko, is to consider all aspects of technology, to study production at each stage. To do this, representatives of major Russian and international manufacturing companies were invited to join the educational webinar as speakers. The first speaker was the regional manager of Caterpillar EurasiaRoman Bobrovsky. His report was devoted to the basics of technologies for soil stabilization and cold regeneration to full depth, as well as the principle of operation of equipment: rotary mixer, roller and grader. The expert urged the audience – road workers representing the regions of the Russian Federation – not to be afraid of the novelty of technology, because experimenting with them began thousands of years ago.

"One of the oldest examples of road construction based on stabilized soil is the Appian Way in Italy, built in 312 BC. Various stabilizing additives such as lime, sand and crushed volcanic rock were used in the construction. Sections of this road are still in operation! Soil stabilization makes it possible, using two thousand years of experience and modern equipment, to quickly, efficiently and at minimal cost transform broken country roads into a network of modern roads," Roman Bobrovsky said.

Soil stabilization makes it possible to increase the strength of the foundation, both the roadbed and the pavement to increase their bearing capacity, as well as to reduce the likelihood of shrinkage and swelling. This technology has a lot of advantages: it gives the soil water resistance, increases strength and durability, improves the quality of materials and reduces the cost of work, providing savings of 30% of costs compared to the traditional method.

style="text-align: left;"> Another innovative technology that was discussed is cold regeneration to full depth, it is the grinding and mixing of a layer of existing asphalt concrete pavement with the materials under it and obtaining a homogeneous material with improved characteristics. This approach makes it possible to eliminate deep cracks, potholes, ruts, swelling from freezing, parabolic shape and makes it possible to strengthen the strength of the base layer. Roman Bobrovsky explained in detail how to use both technologies.

One of the key conditions for working with regeneration and stabilization technologies is undoubtedly the choice of the necessary materials. She told about this in her speechOlga Vorobyeva, Deputy Director for Organizational Activities of the CC FAU "ROSDORNII". It clearly showed that a significant increase in the strength of the roadway and an increase in the service life of the road can be achieved only by analyzing the materials with which further work is to be done.

"It is important to take into account the thickness of the layer, the residual bitumen and the grain composition of the existing asphalt concrete, to determine the type and exact dosage of new components for the purpose of cold regeneration, because an error at this stage can negate all subsequent efforts. For example, an incorrect dosage of bitumen binder can lead to the formation of a rut on the future coating layer, and regeneration to an insignificant depth may not only have a positive effect, but on the contrary, it may reduce the strength of the base," Olga Vorobyova warned.

During the report, the main properties of binding materials affecting the process of soil stabilization were announced, and the necessary recommendations were given on the choice of optimal compositions in accordance with the working conditions.

The topic of the materials was continued by the invited speaker, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Paragon Group LLCAlexander Bosov, having told about some nuances of chemical processes occurring during soil stabilization.

"In recent years, the road industry in many countries of the world has been facing urgent tasks aimed at further development of the network regional and local roads, which should lead to faster economic growth and improve the quality of life of the population. To solve these issues, it is necessary to more actively apply the world's best engineering innovative solutions. At the same time, it is especially important to use such technologies and materials that can both reduce the cost of work and shorten the construction time, and increase their reliability and increase the inter–repair time," Alexander Bosov began his speech.

We are talking about the use of specialized road-building materials for chemical modification of soils, which reduce the cost of construction work by replacing imported materials with local ones. The quality of work is only increasing, the inter-repair service life of transport infrastructure facilities is increasing due to improved indicators of frost and crack resistance, compression resistance, water resistance of base layers and coatings. In addition, new technologies are safe for human health and the environment.

The application of innovations is impossible without appropriate regulatory documentation. A report was dedicated to her Evgeny Damier, Advisor to the General Director of the FAA "ROSDORNIA". The speaker spoke about the system of standards governing the use of regeneration and stabilization technologies in the territory of the Russian Federation, as well as about the features of its inclusion in the project documentation.

"Since most of the documents regulating work with these technologies are now at the stage of preliminary national standards, you need to be very careful when developing project documentation and subsequent acceptance of work, because in the future this experience will be taken into account when forming a package of new GOST standards," said Evgeny Damier.

The speaker also spoke about the full range of tests carried out using various advanced laboratory and diagnostic equipment. Evgeny Damier recommended paying great attention to the projects of work, stressed the need for a clear indication of the list of mandatory tests and deadlines. The expert also advised to confirm the design composition of the mixture in the laboratory and focus mainly on the results of laboratory selection.

left;"> And since regeneration and stabilization technologies have a huge potential to increase the service life of highways, active work is already underway to create all the necessary regulatory documentation for these tests. According to the expert, it is necessary to create a new package of regulatory legal acts with the approval of the list of tests and new methodological recommendations for each specific technology separately.

Speaking about the technologies of the 21st century in road construction, it is impossible not to touch on the topic of ensuring the accuracy of work. In the final report of the webinar , he spoke about the impact of advanced digital technologies on the quality of road worksAlexander Pavlikov, Regional Director of Trimble, one of the market leaders in the production of high-precision engineering and geodetic equipment and software.

"When builders are faced with the goal of implementing the ideas laid down in the project, they will undoubtedly face the question: "How to make adjustments to the work in real time in order to achieve the desired result?" That's what a spatial data collection system is for. and their transfer to the digital world in order to quickly verify and achieve maximum accuracy and quality," Alexander Pavlikov explained.

The speaker spoke about various methods of working in the field, ranging from traditional leveling and ending with drones capable of filming large production facilities in a matter of hours. Alexander Pavlikov provided information about the pros and cons of various data collection systems, focusing on choosing the optimal one depending on the task at hand. It was also about the control system for the volume of work and the consumption of road construction materials. The practice of using such technologies on construction sites around the world shows that the presence of a tablet with the necessary software from the master of road works can greatly save time on making correct organizational and technical decisions.

After all the reports were delivered, the webinar lasted another hour so that the speakers had time to answer numerous questions from the conference participants. In total, about 190 listeners took part. Let's add that the online seminar is just the beginning of training events on topics of technologies of cold regeneration and stabilization of soils. Practical classes are also planned, but already in the new year.

"Initially, we planned to conduct training on working with these technologies directly "on hardware" with the support of Caterpillar, but as we know, the pandemic made its own adjustments, and we were forced to decide to break this training into several stages and hold the first one in the format of an All-Russian webinar. However, in 2021, we still plan to organize training events in the format of industrial practice, so that representatives of the regions can personally familiarize themselves with the work of the technological link for regeneration and stabilization," announced Alexey Varyatchenko, General Director of the FAA ROSDORNIA.
