At the beginning of March, a scientific and practical seminar was held at the head institution of the FAA "ROSDORNII", dedicated to the peculiarities of the application of modern regulatory and technical documents establishing technical requirements and testing methods for asphalt concrete mixtures and asphalt concrete, as well as bitumen binders.

The event was attended by employees of testing laboratories of the branch network of the FAA "ROSDORNII".

The seminar consisted of a theoretical part, during which experts shared their experience in testing asphalt concrete mixtures and bitumen binders, including as part of measures to monitor the quality of road works performed in the constituent entities of the Russian Federation in 2020, and a practical part devoted to demonstrating various tests carried out at the facilities of the laboratory of the head institution, primarily to determine the rheological properties of bitumen binder and the operational properties of asphalt concrete.

During the theoretical part of the seminar, the following main issues were considered:

  • features and benefits methodologies of volumetric and functional design in determining the actual characteristics of bitumen binders and asphalt concrete;

  • determination of requirements for bitumen binders depending on climatic parameters and traffic conditions;

  • the results of the assessment of the compliance of the properties of bitumen binders with the climatic conditions of their use for various subjects of the Russian Federation;

  • influence and consideration of the heterogeneity of the granulometric composition of mineral components in the design of the composition of asphalt concrete mixture.

During the practical part of the seminar, employees of the testing laboratory of the head institution, with the participation of employees of the laboratories of the branches, conducted a complex of tests of asphalt concrete and bitumen binders according to the following nomenclature of indicators:

  • determination of mixing and compaction temperatures;

  • determination of the upper limit of the PG bitumen binder;

  • determination of the lower limit of the PG bitumen binder;

  • determination of the maximum density of asphalt concrete mixtures;

  • determination of grain composition and binder content in asphalt concrete mix;

  • production of asphalt concrete samples with a given number of pores using various sealing mechanisms;

  • determination of the volumetric density of asphalt concrete samples;

  • determination of the water resistance of asphalt concrete;

  • determination of the abrasion of asphalt concrete;

  • determination of the resistance of asphalt concrete to rutting;

  • determination of fatigue strength of asphalt concrete during repeated bending.

The format of the event, which provides for the consolidation of theoretical knowledge gained in practice, has confirmed its effectiveness.
