The study of soils for the construction of highways continues in Yamal
YANAO Government, 02/16/2022
Studies of the state of permafrost with the help of ground-penetrating radar were carried out
in areas with deformation of the roadbed Nadym - Salekhard
and at the transport interchange "Solnechnaya" in Novy Urengoy. Experts have studied the condition of the road and permafrost soils, conducted an inspection of the roadway. This will allow us to characterize the features of permafrost behavior
in the region and take them into account in future work.
Based on scientific research, road workers will be able to predict further changes and prevent the consequences. It is planned to monitor the condition of soils on an ongoing basis in different seasons.
According to experts, for more accurate results, it is necessary to observe the soils both during their maximum freezing,
and maximum thawing.
"The stability of highways is determined not only by the design decisions made, the quality of road materials, competent technical implementation of the project, but also by specific engineering and geological conditions and their changes. The data obtained after the research will improve the quality of design
and the construction of highways and artificial structures
in permafrost conditions on Yamal," said Svetlana Gillich, Deputy Director of the Department of Transport and Road Management of the Yamal Autonomous Okrug.
The qualitative condition of the roadway is one
of the factors that ensure road safety, therefore, special attention is paid to maintenance and repair in the district.
In order to prevent deformation of permafrost soils in the areas of highways, road builders first of all isolate the constructed structures from water, and protect them from heat: they lay thermal insulation material (foam) on the base of the roadbed.
"We use proven and proven technologies
in other regions, in accordance with current road regulations
and standards. In order to apply something new, many years of research are needed, on the basis of which changes will be made
in the existing rules of design, construction, repair
and road maintenance. This is what Yamal scientists are working for
on the 73-meter experimental section of the landfill highway
MSW of Salekhard, where the experimental design of the pavement is being tested. This is a long–term scientific process," emphasizes Svetlana Gillich.
In the last construction season, road builders used asphalt-concrete mixture "Superpave" on a three-kilometer section of the Nadym - Salekhard road. Another section with a length of about 4 km was carried out by the method of cold regeneration with the strengthening of the crushed stone coating "recycling". The composition of the mixtures and strengthening additives that were used during the repair was selected in consultation with scientists.
Currently, maintenance work is underway on the road – clearing the roadway from snow, clearing roadsides, removing snow behind the barrier fence, clearing and opening the culvert heads. 19 pieces of equipment and 15 road workers are involved in the work.
