  • Abstract: The paper presents a scheme of justification of calculation values of clay soil characteristics for the design of road pavements under the condition of strength, aimed at ensuring the quality of road design in regions with underdeveloped infrastructure. The scheme is presented in the form of two blocks investigated step-by-step. The first block includes operations aimed at identifying homogeneous by complex of geographical components of territories in the taxonomic system «road zone – subzone – region». The second block reflects the works to substantiate the calculated values of moisture content, modulus of elasticity, strength characteristics for the territories of administrative formations of the Russian Federation. The implementation of the proposed approaches to road-climatic zoning, justification of values of characteristics of widespread clay soils helps to ensure reliable operation of road structures in natural and climatic conditions of poorly studied regions.

  • Abstract: The issues of the manifestation of nonlinear properties of unbound granular materials are considered. In order to describe the operation of unbound materials in the road pavement construction, the tests were carried out with the dynamic loading unit of the structure arranged in the section for accelerated pavement testing. Sensors of various types were incorporated into the structure when it was installed. These included vertical pressure sensors installed in the base layer as well as on the surface of the working layer of the subgrade soil. Using a dynamic loading unit, the authors determined the parameters of the elastic deflection bowl of the pavement surface. These parameters, in accordance with the current requirements, were applied to calculate the elastic moduli of the pavement layers by the back calculation method in the program implementing the solution of the elasticity theory for a multilayer half-space. The results of the numerical model were compared with the data obtained from sensors placed in the structural pavement layers during field measurements. On the basis of comparison of the measurement values, a difference of up to 34 % was found, which additionally confirms the necessity to take into account the nonlinear properties of non-cohesive granular materials in the design of non-rigid pavements.

  • Abstract: The article presents an analysis of the technologies involved in the positioning of highly automated vehicles, such as: global navigation satellite system (GNSS), including two methods – real-time kinematics (RTK) and precise point positioning (PPP), odometry technologies, including wheel, radar, inertial, visual and laser, as well as UWB (ultra-wideband). It has been established that in terms of application of the above technologies for the movement of highly automated vehicles, none of them separately, as well as any of their combinations do not provide high accuracy and minimum positioning time. The solution to the problem of increasing the accuracy of positioning only through the development of systems placed on board the highly automated vehicle is quite difficult to realize. One of the solutions to this problem is the use of high definition (HD) maps, which are an important component of the digital road infrastructure of intelligent transport systems.

  • Abstract: The transportation sector assumes a pivotal role in developing economies, such as Myanmar, where the construction industry is experiencing rapid growth. However, the country often faces resource constraints in the transport sector, which can lead to problems regarding the integrity and quality of construction projects. The development of transportation infrastructure has a direct impact on Myanmar's overall quality of life, and efforts are underway to improve the technical condition of the transport system. Despite progress in road safety and transport efficiency, the country's transport sector still faces many issues. In this regard, it is important that the issues of supplying high quality materials and procedures, training specialists of construction companies in quality standards, use of materials, and attracting skilled labour are effectively addressed at the state level. While the construction of new transport infrastructure has contributed significantly to Myanmar's rapid economic growth, it is critical to maintain the quality condition of the country's existing road network. The authors of the article provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of road safety and the transport sector in Myanmar, identifying key issues to further development. Recommendations are made to address existing problems, including improving road infrastructure, enhancing driver education and training, strengthening the role of law enforcement and increasing investment in modern transport systems.

  • Abstract: The article reflects a part of dissertation research by one of the authors of this publication. The results of researches on technological stability of crushed stone-mastic asphalt concrete mixtures reinforced with synthetic fibre are presented. As the main criterion of technological stability the indicator of binder run-off is considered. According to optimization of this criterion, the effective compositions of additives for asphalt concrete mixtures on the basis of synthetic fibre of different length and short cellulose fibre, depending on the maximum coarseness of mineral aggregate of crushed stone-mastic asphalt concrete mixtures, as well as taking into account the obtained dependences to the estimation of viscosity of asphalt binders of different composition (for crushed stone-mastic asphalt concrete mixtures of selected composition) at high working temperature of 160 °C, have been proposed. The developed methodological principles of regulation of technological properties of crushed stone-mastic asphalt concrete as an element of design system of crushed stone-mastic asphalt concrete mixtures composition can be used.

  • Abstract: The article addresses one of the most critical tasks for the domestic road industry: accurate determination of low-temperature properties of bituminous binders. The solution to this problem will allow the justified selection of binders with specified properties, tied to the temperature conditions of operation on road sections, when properly designed, capable of ensuring the required level of low-temperature properties of asphalt concrete pavements for Russian regions when properly designed. The methodology of volumetric and functional design provides for the use of several devices at once for the designated purposes. In particular, a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), a bending beam rheometer (BBR) and an ABCD device are provided for the use. The ABCD method is the newest of its kind proposed for estimating the cracking temperature of binders at low temperatures. An important point is the convert of the directly recordable readings of the device into the normalized values of the «cracking temperature» indicator. The paper proposes a variant of the justification of the specified convert. The results obtained were included in the text of the national standard GOST R 58400.11. In addition, the test results obtained by the authors are presented to clearly verify the comparability of the different test methods. The assessment of the comparability of test results from the Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) and the ABCD device with the application of test results from different laboratories in the Interlaboratory Comparative Testing of Road Construction Materials (ICRM) between 2022 and 2023 has been carried out.

  • Abstract: Currently, the use of recycled raw materials from various types of waste is a particularly relevant and important area of resource conservation in the road industry. In world practice, rubber crumb (RC) and rubber powder (RP), obtained by grinding worn-out car tires, are widely used for the construction of asphalt concrete pavements. The advantages associated with the use of RC and RP in the field of road activities make it possible to reduce the use of traditional road construction materials, reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and improve the environmental situation. This review article provides an analysis of the microstructure of crushed rubber, considers the issues of swelling of rubber particles in bitumen, homogeneity and phase separation of the binder, and studies the features of its interaction with bitumen in asphalt concrete mixture by using the main technological methods of its production: as a filler in asphalt concrete mixture and a modifier of bitumen binder. Further directions of research in the field of using RK and RP for the purpose of their rational application in the road industry are considered.
